A Visit to Legoland

While my husband and my children are young, we’re trying to include some of the activities that they enjoy into our travels. On a vacation to San Diego, California to visit relatives one winter, we decided to head over to Legoland. As adults, my husband and I ended up having more fun than we expected. We found the history of Legos fascinating, the rides enjoyable, and food options that pleased all of us (even gluten free choices for me!)

Legoland is about a half an hour drive north of San Diego. It’s a good option for some entertainment whether you have a half day to spend at the park, or a full day. Even with all that we were able to see and do during our time there, our kids want to go visit again to see more.

We started the day at the morning opening to the park at 9am. The staff was getting the crowd excited with the theme song to the Lego Movie, “Everything is Awesome.” I was a little afraid that the park would be crowded on the day we were visiting as there were quite a few buses and cars in the parking lot already. As soon as they opened the park though, there was plenty of space to spread out.

Our favorite activity at the park was visiting the actual set of the Lego Movie. We learned that those that were working on it didn’t know its use until after it was built. It took seven years to assemble the city. We had fun watching our children figure out where different scenes from the movie took place on the set.

While we were on the Legoland campus, we decided to check out the on-site hotel. The hotel is located right at the entrance of the park and has many offerings. Various themed hotel rooms, nighttime entertainment for children, and a buffet breakfast are just a few of the possibilities at the hotel. Something great about staying at the hotel is the option to take a break during the day, and then head back for more entertainment in the park until it closes at 8pm.

Legoland offers many tips and hints to make sure you enjoy your experience. Their website is full of ways to help you plan your time in the park. They offer options for a VIP experience, an electronic ride reservation system, an unlimited digital photo pass, and accommodations for dietary restrictions. They also offer stroller, locker, and wheelchair rentals. Plan out these resources ahead of time to make sure you utilize your time in the park.
What we enjoyed about visiting Legoland was having it be a different experience than many other theme parks. Both of our children have enjoyed Lego brand toys from a very young age starting with Duplo blocks, so they felt a connection to the park. It wasn’t just based around entertainment, but learning as well. Legos are a great tool for building fine motor skills and creativity. Overall, our visit to the park was a wonderful experience for each of us!
